From the Silk Road collection by Philip Jacobs for Snow Leopard Designs, produced by Free Spirit fabrics, this fabulous, richly coloured print is inspired by Ming Dynasty Chinese silk embroidered fabrics. Printed on patchwork weight cotton*, it makes an ideal coordinate for my sashiko panels and is one of the fabrics I am using for the sashiko sampler stitch along quilts. Chinese design and culture has influenced Japan in a similar way to how Classical Roman and Greek design and culture has influenced Britain, and mixing designs from both sources can result in some interesting coordinations. Actually, some Chinese and Japanese patterns, even some sashiko design sources, can be traced back to the ancient Mediterranean too!

Philip Jacobs has been designing fabrics for over four decades and is a highly respected textile artist. He takes inspiration from many sources including nature, antique fabrics, and Japanese and Chinese traditional designs. Well known for his exquisite floral fabrics, his draughtsmanship is second to none. He designs for two brands, Snow Leopard Designs (his solo work) and the Kaffe Fasset Collective. Read more about Philip's work on the Snow Leopard Designs Facebook page.

The pattern repeat is approx. 31cm (12 1/8in) and the larger flowers measure 13.3cm (5 1/4in) across. This is a very large scale print.

Printed on patchwork weight cotton, this fabric makes an ideal coordinate for my sashiko panels, and the colours can be matched from my extensive range of sashiko threads. Free Spirit fabrics are printed on a 68 count cotton rather than the 60 count used for many other brands, meaning they are slightly finer than many patchwork fabrics and are also suitable for making clothing.
