I always tack (baste) the layers of my quilt sandwich together with thread rather than pins, and always use a proper tacking thread, which is designed to be removed easily. Having different colours to choose from is great, because I can always find one that will contrast with my fabric, so I can see it more easily when I want to remove it. I also use tacking thread a lot for costuming, dressmaking, home dec - anywhere I need a removable, temporary thread.
