One of a range of sashiko kits inspired by the concept of nagomi* ('balance' or 'harmony'), these beautiful designs play with traditional Japanese patterns in a fresh, new way, giving you new patterns to explore and develop your sashiko stitching.
This pre printed sashiko sampler kit from Olympus Thread Mfg. Co. is called a 'hana fukin' (which literally means 'flower cloth') in Japanese. It is printed in grey on white narrow width traditional sarashi cloth (an easy to stitch traditional Japanese cotton cloth). Each kit panel is supplied in one piece with a plain area the same size attached, because they are designed to be stitched through both layers and the edges turned in to make a little cloth, but you can stitch the printed layer separately and make them into various other items, such as bags, cushions or quilt panels. They also look great framed.
The traditiona tatewaku (rising steam) pattern is given an elegant new look with an assymmetrical arrangement where a double line version of the pattern contrasts with a layered pattern. You could have a lot of fun playing with colours in this kit!
There are six different sampler designs in this collection - and they are available as as panels (white, or indigo blue for four of the patterns) or as full kits (on white only), with threads and a needle.
This listing is for the full kit, so you get the panel, sashiko threads, sashiko needle, and colour instructions (in Japanese, but very pictorial and easy to follow). The kit is packed in a ziplock plastic packet, so you can store your sashiko neatly while you are working on it, making it the ideal portable project.
Sarashi cloth is quite lightweight compared with other sashiko fabrics, but is very easy to stitch, super absorbent and wears well. It is one of the fabrics traditionally used for kimono underwear!
