#SK331 indigo blue hitomezashi sashiko coaster kit
This kit makes five gorgeous sashiko coasters with hitomezashi (one stitch sashiko) patterns, perfect for a gift or just to keep for yourself! The sashiko designs are printed in grey on indigo blue coloured narrow width traditional sarashi cloth (an easy to stitch traditional Japanese cotton cloth, which is also used for the hanafukin sashiko panels). The instructions are in Japanese but mainly pictorial, so they are easy to follow (you can also use the Google Translate smartphone app to 'read' the Japanese text). Just remember, measurements are all in centimetres, not inches. Kit contains printed sashiko fabric, embroidery threads and a sashiko needle. The coast are backed with the same fabric as the front, and are designed to be stitched through both layers of fabric, but would work equally well stitched through one layer, so the reverse of the pattern isn't visible on the back.
Hitomezashi is sewn as straight rows of running stitch, going back and forth across each pattern vertically, horizontally and diagonally, rather than stitching around each part of the pattern separately. It is quick and easy to do. The patterns in this kit are a mixture of contemporary designs and traditional patterns, so some may be completely new to you, even if you have stitched hitomezashi before. A great way to learn some new patterns! There is another kit for two coasters with a different pattern selection, on the same indigo blue sarashi cotton fabric, which would coordindate nicely with this one if you wanted to make a set of seven coasters. Two of the designs are available as larger hanafukin panels, also on indigo blue coloured sarashi, juuji tsunagi and mitsu kakinohanazashi, if you want to make some larger coordinating pieces.
Finished size for the stitched area is 10cm (4in approx) square, and the coasters are approx. 4 3/4in finished size.
Marks wash out.
