Arts and Crafts inspiration with a contemporary twist, 'Flower Dance' by Jane Sassaman for FreeSpirit Fabrics has gorgeous stylised floral patterns in luciously bold colours. This listing is for the waving 'Fern' pattern, in purple, green and turquoise on a sunshine yellow background (first photo). A great alternative to a simple stripe for a directional, it would give a lively effect to any patchwork design, or clothing.

Printed on patchwork weight cotton, this fabric makes an ideal coordinate for my sashiko panels, and the colours can be matched from my extensive range of sashiko threads. Free Spirit fabrics are printed on a 68 count cotton rather than the 60 count used for many other brands, meaning they are slightly finer than many patchwork fabrics and are also suitable for making clothing.

I will be making up some fat quarter bundles - as soon as possible.

110cm (43in) wide (approx).

100% cotton

NB - this fabric is sold by the half metre, so please order '1' for 1/2m, '2' for 1m etc.

  • Jane Sassaman takes her queue from the classic patterns of the Arts and Crafts Movement mixed with some of her own garden favorites. Of course, her refreshing interpretation adds a modern twist with contemporary colors, dynamic graphics, Sassaman Symmetry and a splash of mystery and romance. This magical mixture results in fabrics that are very quiltable, wearable, embellish-able and home-dec desirable. These heartfelt designs are ideal for sewing projects of any scale, from intricate English Paper Pieced millefiori to pieced and appliquéd bed-sized quilts. Plus, Jane’s personality prints are wonderful focus fabrics for decorative projects of all kinds. Sew some seeds of creativity, and let Flower Dance waltz you down the path of inspiration.

Drawing inspiration from her experience as a window dresser, sign maker, illustrator and designer of decorative accessories, Jane began to quilt in 1980. Since then, her exuberant quilt and fabric designs have attracted worldwide recognition. Influenced by 19th century Arts and Crafts designers, her work is abstracted from nature, but her signature graphic style is totally contemporary.

As an art quilter, Jane’s designs are always recognizable for their bold color and graphic style. Her quilt Willow was named as one of the hundred best American quilts of the 20th century. Today she is translating her unique vision into exuberant fabrics for FreeSpirit. Like her quilts, Jane's fabrics are nature-inspired, large scaled and colorfully enthusiastic. They have been lovingly referred to as "William Morris on anti-depressants".

“I try to express the energy and mystery of our amazing universe - from the miraculous beauty of a single blossom to the complicated powers of the soul. I believe that a well-designed object can make a positive statement about its owner,” says Jane.

When she isn’t designing fabric in the studio, she is on the road teaching quilt classes, sketching in the garden or browsing through her wonderful library of design books. She is also the author of “Patchwork Sassaman Style” and "The Quilted Garden", which includes twenty years of her work and exercises for making nature-inspired quilts.
