One of my most popular quilt patterns that has been made many times, Irori (meaning 'sunken hearth'), is ideal for striped and directional fabrics, a handful of plaids and a few prints.The pattern can be easily adapted by adding or removing columns and blocks to make larger or smaller quilts. Size of quilt shown is 69in square. Pattern is printed in full colour, with easy to follow diagrams. The sashiko inspired quilting design used for the version on the pattern cover was quilted using fine cream sashiko thread.

I also made a green version of the quilt, which was long arm quilted with an all over pattern, mixed striped fabrics with a pack of Moda Japanese style prints.This quilt was included in my book 'Japanese Quilt Inspirations' so if you have the book, you already have the pattern!

From the pattern cover -
Capture the Japanese country look with this quick to piece quilt made from 9-inch blocks that echo the layout of the traditional irori, the sunken hearth that was the centre of farmhouse life. Combining stripes, checks and oriental prints, the blocks are easy to make using part sewn seams. The blocks are ideal for 14½in wide traditional Japanese fabrics, American country flannels and European woven cottons too. The patchwork is arranged in strips, with each column stepping down by a third, giving the quilt a sense a movement. The design can be varied by increasing or decreasing the number of fabrics used for the blocks. Finish the quilt by quilting in the ditch or add the optional sashiko-style big stitch quilting design included in the instructions. Finished size 69in square approx.

Fabric requirements for quilt top – all are standard width quilting fabrics

  • sixteen fat quarters assorted Japanese prints or equivalent – to make quilt as shown:

six fat quarters of small Japanese geometric prints;

three fat quarters of larger Japanese prints;

one fat quarter kasuri ikat fabric or similar print;

one fat quarter kasuri ikat fabric or 19½in (a half metre) narrow width;

five fat quarters striped cotton or 19½in (a half metre) narrow width

  • forty nine 3½in squares from eight different checked fabrics for block centres
  • four 66½ x 3½in striped fabric strips for borders (can be cut from narrow width)

If you would like to include some of the Sakizome Momen precuts for the block strips, you would be able to cut twelve 6 1/2 x 3 1/2in strips from each 35 x 50cm precut, giving enough strips for three blocks.

The quilt was big stitch quilted using 370m fine cream sashiko thread (with plenty left over!)
