This red and white quilt was inspired by my visit to teach sashiko (Japanese quilting) on the Danish island Fanoe in September 2009. The centre of each block is based on the unusual cottage door windows in Sonderho village and the surrounding triangles and block arrangement are reminiscent of the antique Dutch tiles brought back to the island as ships’ ballast, set on point for a lively design.

The red and white scheme was inspired by the Danish and English flags, but it would work well with any strong contrast, including blue and white, checks, stripes and polka dots. I've made it in a blue and white version too, using vintage Japanese yukata cottons (each fat quarter is replaced with 0.75m of each yukata fabric).

It uses eight fat quarters of white on red prints (or dark fabrics) and nine fat quarters of red on white (or light fabrics), plus extra fabric for the setting triangles and borders. The finished quilt is approximately 76in (193cm) square.

To make one the same as mine, you will need:
Eight fat quarters of white on red prints
Nine fat quarters of red on white prints
2 metres white on red print for borders
Red on white print for the setting triangles -six 115/8in squares, halved diagonally; one12in square, quartered diagonally
White cotton thread for sewing patchwork
Backing and batting –4in (10.2cm) larger than the quilt top for hand or machine quilting or 12in (30.5cm) larger than the quilt top for longarm quilting
8.2 metres plain red binding, to finish

The pattern includes full colour step-by-step photos for making the blocks, plus assembly diagrams for the quilt top. Quilting and binding instructions are not included - the sample quilt was longarm quilted with a pantograph pattern, but the quilt may be completed with whatever quilting design and binding method you like best. Skill level - Intermediate. This quilt design includes setting triangles and working with bias cut edges.

The quilt may be sewn by hand or machine.
