This print of oiran (high ranking Edo era courtesans), among fans and flowers, is curiously named Kanedai (which means 'shop counter' (cash + stand)). You can distinguish oiran from geisha by the way they are dressed, with the oiran having particularly sumptuous kimono and wearing multiple long hair pins. Gleaming gold adds extra luxury to their ensembles. Perfect for adding that authentic touch to your Japanese themed project. Multicoloured print on a black background.

I used a lot of these kinds of prints in my books 'Japanese Quilt Blocks to Mix and Match' and 'Japanese Quilt Inspirations', and they aren't so easy to find at the moment, so I'm always pleased when I spot another design I love.
