These stunning new colours of sashiko are new releases for 2025. Be one of the first to add these fabulous new sashiko thread colours to your collection!
Medium mercerised sashiko thread 100m skein, shade #135 'shu', vermillion red (first photo), more orange than 100m #105 - one of ten new solid colours! Suitable for all your sashiko and boro stitching. May be used double or singly.
The manufacturer says - 'Shu is a traditional Japanese color name, and the color is based on the image of "vermilion'', which is derived from a single, unclouded, shining sun. The color stands out well on the fabric, and when you stitch it on a white flower dish towel, you can create a beautiful piece that looks like a wedding accessory.' This vivid red is combined with white on Japanese wedding items, considered the traditional girls' colour, with white the boys', and is used at other celebratory occasions like New Year.
Please note - this mercerised thread feels slightly smoother and thinner than the non-mercerised 20m sashiko thread. It is less likely to 'shred' or go slightly fluffy when stitching.
Ideal for my printed sashiko panels.
Sashiko needles - use either Olympus Thread Mfg. Co.sashiko needles 2 pack or 4 pack.
Available in many beautiful solid colours, plus 'bokashi' (shading to white) and varigated multicolours.

#135 Shu vermillion 100m medium sashiko thread
Sashiko threads skeins have to be opened out before use. Slide of the skein band first. You will find all the thread is tied together at one point. Cut through the skein at the knot, so all the threads are cut (you'll find these are the ideal length for stitching doubled). Push all the thread through the skein band, and then plait the thread loosely. Pull out each thread as you need it from the loop end of the plait, not the 'fringed' end. This saves time trying to wind the thread into a ball, keeps it tidy and you know the thread shade number if you need to re order.
