'Koginsashi renzoku moyō zuan-shū' (Kogin-zashi continuous pattern design collection) is a fabulous new collection of continuous or all over kogin patterns. Many designs and pattern arrangements are unique to this author, Tomoko Ueki. Kogin is the counted form of sashiko originating from around Hirosaki city, Aomori Prefecture, stitched on evenweave fabrics such as 18 count cotton and 20 count linen, using a thicker kogin thread and a kogin needle with a rounded tip. It you enjoy cross stitch, blackwork, hitomezashi (one stitch sashiko), or any counted embroidery technique, you'll love kogin.
The book has very clear explanations of how to stitch, with excellent step by step photos and diagrams showing every stage. Every pattern has both a stitched sample and a pattern chart, which is easy to follow. The book explores how different arrangements of traditional motifs (modoko) can create continuous patterns, and how many different patterns can be created. It is a collection of kogin-zashi designs recommended for those who want to make new designs incorporating their favorite motif patterns, and those who want to stitch a bigger variety of designs.
The text, as you can see from the photos, is all in Japanese, but if you have done a little kogin before you will find the diagrams very easy to follow. You can use phone apps like Google translate to scan and auto translate text too. Measurements are all in metric throughout.
Who would enjoy this book? If you want an easy source of some beautiful all over kogin patterns that can be used for many different projects, this would be the ideal book for you. Only a handful of the designs are the same as those in 'The Ultimate Kogin Collection', so it is a great way to expand your kogin pattern repertoire. If you are a complete beginner and would prefer some English language instructions too, 'The Ultimate Kogin Collection' would make a great companion to this book.
