The colours of midwinter landscape and skies suggested this subtle selection of thirteen 25 x 26cm (approx.) assorted pieces cut from 110cm wide new fabrics ranging from pale lavender and greyish lilac to deep aubergine and imperial purple, plus a skein of #4 dark brown fine 4-ply mercerised Yokota Daruma sashiko thread. The fabrics are all two tone shot Peppered Cottons from Studio E, woven in India. These are suitable for patchwork, as a lighter weight fabric for sashiko (especially with the finer sashiko threads), and perfect for including in boro inspired stitching, such as the free tote bag project link on my TV and Free Stuff!

page (there's enough fabric to make two of these, if extra fabric is used for the bag foundation panels and handles). The subtly different warp and weft thread colours in the Peppered Cottons gives them a really amazing depth of colour, which is hard to capture in a photo. They are very similar in quality and colour to some of the fabrics that were used for the lower linings on informal Japanese kimono in the early C20th.

Most of these Peppered Cottons are already available by the half metre on my website and I'll be adding the new colours shortly, if you want to get more fabric to coordinate with this pack.Peppered Cottons have a slightly shiny, 'calendered' finish fresh from the bolt, which disappears when washed - the fabrics become more matte and the colours seem even more intense.

4-ply fine sashiko thread is excellent thread for stiching boro, and one I use a lot. I recommend using the smaller sizes of Clover sashiko needles for stitching boro inspired work with this thread, as they will go through the fabric a little easier than the larger sashiko needles.

Boro inspiration packs were very popular when I launched them at the autumn World Textile Days in 2021 and I'm adding more online soon.
