Thicker and a little stiffer than our other sashiko fabrics, this indigo blue Prairie Cloth by French General for Moda would be excellent for sashiko, boro inspired work, bag making and other projects. It is made to look like old cloth, with a very chunky weave (approximately 22 count!), and the threads are so easy to see you could use it for hitomezashi in the way that the old sashiko stitchers used to - using the line of the threads in the fabric to keep their stitching straight!  It also makes a great base for appliqué.

Although it is similar to an evenweave, it is not a true evenweave - it looks like there may be approx. 23 - 24 weft threads per inch and 22 warp threads, so if used for cross stitch, the pattern would appear slightly distorted. Due to the chunky weave, I would allow 3/8in (1cm) for seam allowances on projects. I've zoomed in a little on the second photo, so you can see the weave detail.

I have the same fabric with a faux sashiko hitomezashi (one stitch sashiko) already woven in, so if you want to create a hitomezashi pattern like komezashi (rice stich) or a kugurizashi ('go through' or woven sashiko) pattern like kikkozashi (hexagon stitch), you could use that.

I used Prairie Cloth several times when I was starting out with sashiko, but then I couldn't find it easily for a long, long time. It is a great fabric for hard wearing projects, easy to mark, and not too hard to stitch. Suitable for fine and medium sashiko threads.

I tried to order another both from my wholesaler when this arrived, but they were already out of stock! So I many not be able to reorder this colour.
