A four strand splittable sashiko thread from Naito Shoji Co., Japan, 'Naska' thread can also be used for kogin and other embroidery. This versatile thread can be split and recombined for kogin on 18 count and 20 count fabrics using a kogin needle, used straight from the skein as a thick sashiko thread used in any combination of strands for other embroidery effects. The thread has a slight sheen. Bought individually, plain colours are £6 per skein.

The fabrics are 100% linen, specially made by Olympus Thread Mfg. Co. for kogin (counted sashiko). Now available in several colours. Precut and individually packaged in Japan. The packets have five free mini kogin charts on the back.

Handwash.  Do not dry clean or tumble dry.

Susan's comment about the fabric - 'Although this is the slightly finer of the two Olympus Thread Mfg. Co. kogin fabrics, I find it is easier to stitch because the holes are slightly larger and the threads finer than the 18 count evenweave cotton fabric. It has a more "handmade" look than the 18 count.  Suitable for our kogin thread, Naska sashiko thread, or DMC or Anchor Soft Cotton. My favourite kogin fabric, and Olympus Thread Mfg. Co. introduced the colours on my request!'

Translated from Japanese packaging -

Notes on linen cloth. 100% linen fabric that takes advantage of the natural texture. Linen fabric produces black and brown knots and slubs.  Please note that you may break the thread if you try to stitch too forcefully. There may be a slight error in the thread count number due to unevenness in the weave and thread. Please understand that this is a perculiarity of linen fabric including a feeling of wrinkles and distortion. if the cloth is slightly distorted, please pull the cloth square before starting to stitch.  Please be aware that the cloth ends unravel easily*.

Susan's tip - * zigzag or oversew the edges of the fabric before starting to stitch, to prevent fraying.

*Purchase any threads or fabrics from my Ukraine fundraiser until further notice and I will donate 20% of the retail price to the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) to help Ukrainian refugees. I have chosen the DEC because the UK government will match the value of our donation, effectively doubling the money given. The DEC is an umbrella group for 15 of the UK’s leading aid charities, including Save the Children, Oxfam, British Red Cross and Action Against Hunger. Its Ukraine humanitarian appeal is raising funds for those fleeing their homes. You can either donate via the DEC website, or the individual member sites. Public donations to the DEC will be matched pound for pound by the UK government up to £25m, so making a donation of £50 means a total donation of £100 will be made on your behalf.
